I was reminded yesterday about how we can have an impact even if we don’t know it. Firstly, I was in the Starbucks line-up and got to the front where a student (who has long since graduated) handed me my perfect, steaming latte. She got a huge grin on her face and exploded with pride about her first University English paper mark. She thanked me for being such a great teacher. I just about spilled tears in my latte (which, obviously, would have ruined the thing….)
Also…. My 4th grade son had been working on a science project - he had to do this sugar cane plant display. Naturally, the time that all the 4th graders would be showing off their wonderful work directly coincided with several OTHER commitments. One of those was work. I almost had to move heaven & earth to get there on time. And, of course, like most other little boys would, while I was there he mostly ignored me and chatted with his little friends. I left feeling a bit like I shouldn’t have bothered because he didn’t care too much. That is, until just before his eyes closed. I was rubbing his back and he (as he does every night) asked me to tell him a funny baby story. (He adores hearing about how he spit up on me.) When it was done, in a sleepy little voice, he thanked me for coming to see his display. Again, I was moved.
Great reminders that the little things do matter. No matter how small, kindness isn’t ever wasted.
And speaking of wasted, WTF is up with the Batchelor ending ANYHOW?! OMG.
