our vanities… (september ed.)

cover.jpgI’m a Vanity Fair junkie.  As soon as I see the new cover at the grocery store, it’s in my cart.  And I suppose it can be considered a bit of a vice because even when I’ve watched the latest ‘get a budget already’ Oprah show, I still manage to convince myself it is a necessary grocery item, just as important as the skim milk that’s at the top of my list.  (I do that with Starbucks, too.  Hmmmm….)

Anyhow, NEW Vanity Fair in my hands.  And you SOOO don’t want to miss this issue.  Here are the highlights:

10.  The 68th International Best Dressed List.  Naturally I’m THRILLED that Anderson Cooperanderson.jpg, George Clooney & Sofia Coppola are on there.  Also, couples Ashton Kutcher & Demi Moore and Brad & Angelina are there.  Lip smackingly gorgeous people.

9.  Pics of the fab gold bling that’s hip for fall.  (I know I’m not allowed to say hip.  Please remind yourself why here.  And then suck it up.)

8.  The ultimate!  A picture of Columbia Record guru Rick Rubin’s desk.  What a cool blend of metaphysical & new tech stuff.  He’s got a crystal ball and i Ching cards next to his Blackberry.

7.  A visual of the 20 different covers of the Africa Vanity Fair last month.  bono-africa.jpg All the different covers were displayed across Manhattan.

6.  I adore Dominick Dunne.  No, I’ve (of course) never met the man, but I watch him on Larry King whenever he visits there.  And he has a superb regular spot in VF where he covers all the juiciness of those bad Hollywood types.  In this issue, his feature is called “Cheating on Phil with Paris” - He ditches the Phil Spector trial and comments on the shenanigans of the poor little rich girl.  Great article.

5.  In the “Hot Type” section there’s another blurb on Scholastic’s ”Boys Book” - a cool nonfiction tome about “how to be the best at everything”.  If one of my books ever made it to Vanity Fair I’d be over the moon.  The Boy’s Book includes must know tidbits like “how to deal with bullies, how to build a volcano, and how to hypnotize a chicken“.  My kind of book.  Seriously.

4.  miller.jpgAn amazing article on Arthur Miller & “the down syndrome child he deleted from his life”.  I have to say I love the work of Arthur Miller.  And besides his amazing works, his life is so juicy because of all the Marilyn Munroe stuff.  This article is really, really good…  But very sad, too.  For me it humanized Miller - from a shiny icon to a very imperfect man.

3.  A feature on Isabella Blow and her impact on the fashion world.  She committed suicide in May.  I think the coolest thing they said about her was this:

blow.jpg“Most people in fashion get excited about being connected to people who have already made it,” says Ronnie Newhouse.”Issie got excited by discovering people.”

2.  A feature on the enchanted Lake Como - an Italian retreat where Casino Royale (and many others) was made.  The photography is by Annie Leibovitz (so you can imagine the gorgeousness) and it’s too cool for words. como.jpg

1.  The ads.  Many hate them.  I adore them.  chanel.jpgChanel, Juicy Couture, Hermes, Perry Ellis, BCBG Maxazria, Versace, & a series of the St. John line with Angelina as their model.  They’re glossy and fabulous.

hanging on the blog door:   DK-M GONE FISHING

I’m actually not going fishing, but I am headed for a remote ocean side beach this weekend and doubting that there will be easy internet access.  So unless I dig up some kind of wireless treasure along with the shells I’m going to collect, I’ll see you later in the week.  Go buy the new Vanity Fair & a Starbucks Latte instead…. If you’re really good at sticking to a grocery budget, at the very least check out your horoscope on the online VF.  It’s here.

type1.jpgJuicy Writing Website to check out for the weekend.  Again I’m directing you to Bookends LLC.  You may have to scroll down (around August 14th) but there’s a FAB post on author websites.  It’s a must read.
