Our Vanities… November edition

(inhaling with delight)  The New Vanity Fair!  This month, the rationalization for the illegal purchase (illegal because it’s not in the least bit budgeted) was very simple.  It only took a small bit of calculation… Safeway had an airmiles thing.  I needed to spend a certain amount to get 300 airmiles.  I made certain that I was JUST UNDER the required dollar amount.  Then I made a sort of “giving in” face and hucked the mag onto the little conveyor belt.  Voila!  Vanity Fair!  And let me tell you… this month was worth me having to utilize my rusty mathematical skills.

The Cover:  Jackie-O and JFK.  They’re just CLASSIC.  When I look at them, for an instant, I believe the whole American Dream facade.  (Then, of course, I remember their fates and the whole ridiculous illusion bubble pops.  But it’s fun while it lasts.)  Inside, there are “never-before-published-photos”…

Some political stuff… Al Gore & The Clintons… “How it All Went Wrong” & (if you can believe it) “The U.S.’s New White Elephant” talking about the nightmare of the Baghdad Embassy.

The advertising.  red.jpgGAP has a great red t-shirt one.  Go buy a red t-shirt.  Prada, Dior, Hilfiger, DKNY… all of it making me question my decision to NOT starve myself and choose food over waifishness.  The Victoria Secret spread particularly makes me question my latte addiction.  (if you don’t want to go through this torture, just flip through the ads really fast.)

Dominick Dunne (whom I admire, adore, and wish to drink a martini with) writes ”Guilty Feelings” - still on the Phil Spector murder trial.  Time to move on, DD.  Phil’s a nutcase.  He’s probably too freaky to go to jail…  Some forced time with a stylist would probably be enough.

Hilarous “Tips for the Non-Rich & Merely Prosperous” - A Guide to Jetiquette by Nell Scovell.  Tip #6 “Hold it in” is especially good.

A portfolio (photographed by the best of the best Annie Leibovitz) of the greatest Folk Music sensations.  Feist is in there.  feist.jpgLove Feist.

Horoscopes - in my humble opinion (the Libra section is saying I should this month be especially forgiving & humble), Planetarium by Michael Lutin is the best.  Go to www.vanityfair.com to see your own stars.

A wacked article “Moms Gone Wild” by Judith Newman.  Showcasing the mothers of Britney, Paris & Lindsay.  I’m not into the philosophy that the mother figure should be responsible for the errors of her offspring.  But some of the antics… oy.

See, this is why I just remind myself that even those models don’t look like themselves–do you have any idea how much Photoshopping and airbrushing is involved?

    Enjoy that coffee…life’s short! :D
