Bookends LLC had a great post August 09th by author Elizabeth Joy Arnold where she speaks of the three things an author needs to have. Luck. Talent. Perseverance. It’s the “luck” part that I’m going to blather on about here. Talent (hopefully - unless you’re one of those crazy contestants on the audition episodes of American Idol) is self explanatory. And perseverance (even after lengths of time with reams of rejection letters) is key. But I believe that the perseverance is almost not an issue for those people who have that burning knowledge that they ARE destined writers (this applies to all other dreams & destinies) and that even if they wanted to, they couldn’t stop writing and submitting because they know that one day “it” will happen because that’s who they are.
Anyhow, Luck.
Luck is a “juicy” word because it implies some kind of wonderful mystery. And while there might be some fab mystical forces in the world - little invisible leprechauns creating four leaf clovers for very special people, I’m not sure that it’s so bloody random as all that. In fact, that would really suck. Because that means we are totally puppets to the whims of destiny. I like the idea of destiny and all that, but I’d like to think that I have a bit more control of my life.
According to the principles of Feng Shui, there are three types of luck that come into play in a person’s life. This is what Feng Shui says about how luck works…
Heaven Luck (Tien Chai): This is the one that is beyond my control. It’s about the circumstances I was born into. It’s the way that the planets were aligned when I was born and all those factors - positive and negative - that are already set into place. You can’t fight destiny… but no matter what your circumstances are, you still have a lot of power…
Earth Luck (Ti Chai): Earth luck is something I can tap into. I can use my surroundings to be better connected with the ideas of flow. I guess we all want to “flow” through life as smoothly as possible. I can use practices (like Feng Shui) to enhance my experiences. Practices like “decluttering” (see Thursday’s post) can give me an edge with some of the flow I need to get lucky in life. I like this one. It’s about harmony. And I’m more in control.
Mankind Luck (Ren Chai): This one is all on my shoulders. Mankind luck is a powerful thing because it says that I’m in control of my actions and thus reap the consequences. If I can expend some positive energy (being kind and honest, determined and having integrity for example) then I’ll get it back.
So the next time you huck salt over your left shoulder in an attempt to divert bad luck, be sure to clean it up! And remember. Luck is NOT a finite thing. If someone you know has a ton of good luck, it’s not like the pie you had on the table last night. If someone else eats some, you’re not going to be left with crumbs.
