Heroic Acts

justice.jpgMany an evening as I’m lying in bed I smile to myself because I made it through the day, having overcome a few obstacles.  Deanna!  Hero of the modern world!  Defender of all things connected with mothering, teachering, writing… A few things I’ve recently patted myself on the back for…

  • remembering (finally) that Wednesday is garbage day. (Forgetting that in past weeks resulted in me having to perform the invisible superhero act, putting my extra bags of garbage to those neighbours who haven’t reached their limit)
  • surviving three nights of swimming in the minus 28 degree Celsius, icy, snowy road weather conditions (Sheer perseverance superhero act)
  • catching mice in a single bound! (Well… not ONE single bound…. There were several minutes of panic with that whole sticky-mess thing.)
  • choosing the FASTEST grocery store till in the children-having-meltdowns-moments (I could claim x-ray vision, but I used to teach English to the fastest clerk…)
  • performing nose-wiping, book reading, dusting, cooking dinner, & laundry simultaneously!  (Not exactly the wondertwins with their Gleek guy, but really, really close)

So, while many nights I might feel superhuman, I’m sooo not.  But the Heroes they had on the CNN special last night… THEY REALLY ARE.  I was riveted by the selfless, marvelous spirits of regular individuals across the globe.  So many people sacrifice so much and give so much - and wow - some of that footage - especially in Africa - really set my mind straight about what is heroic… (and, naturally, Anderson Cooper & Dr. Sanjay Gupta looked FANTASTIC).  Here’s the link if you missed it: http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/cnn.heroes/

armidill.jpg P.S.  Did you know that the armidillo gives birth to FOUR IDENTICAL babies at a time???  Just some trivia that my fact-obsessed son taught me.
