Delusions (of the long, 2 eared sort)…

rabbit.jpgI don’t particularly like rabbits.  Part of my aversion may stem from the fact that once I was friends with this guy who happened to be a paranoid schizophrenic and he was convinced that he could create an army of obedient rabbits to defend the earth once the bad dudes (who were apparantly everywhere) tried to take over.  He had - literally - thousands of sketch-pad papers with drawings of the rabbit defense systems.

Anyhow… the other evening I drove into the parking lot of a fast food restaurant.  I was meeting my sister who had taken my little Maxito to a concert.  So I’m standing there - and it’s dark and snowing - kind of beautiful surreal… And then a GIANT BLACK rabbit hops up to me.  I kind of blinked because I thought I might be having an Alice in Wonderland moment.  Then I looked around to see if there was another human to validate my vision.  Not another soul in sight.  I stood there just looking at this rabbit.  He looked back at me for a few seconds and then hopped along his way. alice-hat.jpg

Strangely I felt rather groovy about the whole thing.  After all, who gets to just see a rabbit in a parking lot in the middle of the city?  So, I kept the moment private… convinced that it was some kind of a fabulous sign of wonderful things to come.  Black rabbits aren’t at all like black cats as far as superstitions… In Chinese Astrology, rabbits represent kindness & compassion & the symbol of a long life.

So.  I wake up the next morning and look at the front page of the newspaper.  The headline reads:

RESILIENT BUNNY POPULATION IN NEED OF CULLING.

The area I was in is totally, completely over-run by rabbits.

So much for my lucky grandious delusions…

Even with the large population of bunnies - shouldn’t they all be white now to blend with the snow? Maybe a black bunny in winter is still a kind of wonderous cool thing.

Marianne - not so wonderous… I just about ran over a bunch more (black and white this time) as I tried to pull out a cart at Home Depot… Duh. Instead of “watch out for cars in the parking lot” the K-town version is “Watch out for the bunnies in the parking lot”…
